Heather Reviews: The Oscars 2012

So you've probably read enough about the Oscars already, or even watched them; but now it's my turn. This year marked the 84th Academy Awards. It was a great show! I will admit, I didn't really watch the red carpet. It's so long and by the time I tuned in, the coverage wasn't great. Anyhow, on to the show!

Billy Crystal was the host, I personally think he did a great job. I would prefer an experienced host over a new host who tries far too hard. Yes, some of the jokes fell dry, but it was overall good. I enjoyed the beginning, I laughed a lot for sure! Immediately I noticed they were starting with the awards people don't exactly care about. Jennifer Lopez was there, instantly confusing everyone. Why was J-lo there? Probably because she makes such good movies.... (sarcasm.)

A lot of Potter fans were sad that it didn't win any of it's categories. you have to take the Oscars for what they are. Popular movies aren't always the winners. I did find it strange that The Iron Lady beat Albert Hobbes for best makeup. I haven't seen either movie, and they both had great makeup, but what they did with Albert Hobbes is fantastic.

Then foreign films come up, and you can tell nobody really cares about these categories. I found it funny that Canadian movies are foreign, but I guess that's french Canada. Finally, It comes time for best supporting actress. It was an absolutely beautiful moment when Octavia Spencer won. i wanted to cry for her. The Help was one of the movies nominated that I actually saw, and I believe she did phenomenally. She received a standing ovation, which was much deserved. Spencer looked absolutely stunning, and cried throughout her speech. One of the best moments of the night. Christopher Plummer received the best supporting actor Oscar, the oldest to win in history.

The comes the Wizard of Oz focus group skit, which was okay, but it didn't really stick with me. Throughout the broadcast, there is an obvious theme of trying to get people to go to the movie theatre again. this is implanted by small skits, Billy Crystal and Cirque de Soliel. Oh yeah, Cirque de Soliel was AMAZING. They had a movie themed performance, I suggest looking it up on youtube if you missed it! Robert Downie jr makes a hilarious entrance to announce documentary winners, reminding us why we all love him so much. After him, many other hilarious presenters showed up. my personal favourites were Chris Rock (talking about animation and how black people only play Donkeys or Zebras) and Emma Stone with Ben Stiller (Emma was so cute! Running around and dancing)! Then Will Farrel and Zach Galafanakis did some strange symbol playing to "add" humour I guess. It wasn't the funniest thing in the world for me.

Just an Observation, Jonah Hill cannot take a joke in the slightest. Yes, he got picked on quite a bit. He's a comedian, he should be able to take jokes at his personal expenses.

We were now greeted by the amazing celebrity, Angie's right leg. I'm not a fan of Angelina Jolie in the slightest. However, that wasn't why I wasn't the biggest fan of her dress. it was large and black and puffy, not to mention the weird slit the her leg hung out of all night. It looked like something an evil queen would wear. She stood in the strangest poses, which became the joke of the night. There's even a twitter account dedicated to Angie's right leg now. Angie looked very thin, and was obviously covering herself in a thick dress to conceal the fact.

Bridesmaids didn't win best screenplay, and I couldn't help but be a little happy about that. The Bridesmaids cast? Brilliant. Kristen Wiig? hilarious. Did I like it? No. i think i was one of the only people who didn't like that movie, I just didn't find it very funny. However, I did enjoy all of their dresses, they looked like stunning Princesses. Rose Bryne looked very thin, especially next to Melissa Mccarthy.

After that, a beautiful tribute was presented to the song "What a Wonderful World". It was very moving with the black and white photos and the miscellaneous quotes from those that were lost this year. The grandpa from Princess Bride passed this year? inconceivable! That's one of my favourite movies of all time.

Best actor was presented to Jean Dejarden(The Artist) by Natalie Portman. I've yet to see the movie, but I want to. Onto best actress. Colin Firth presented Meryl Streep with the oscar. My friend and I noticed she was wearing a gold dress, just like the last time she won. I love how Colin Firth talked about Mamma Mia! Meryl totally deserved the Oscar. I probably won't ever see The Iron Lady, but Meryl is absolutely amazing in everything.

The Artist won for best movie, it wasn't really a shocker. A silent film in 2012 is really special. Hugo won most of the awards, The Artist winning a few more. I need to watch those movies.

Overall, I thought the show was really good. People were complaining that they were boring. They're the Oscars, not the MTV movie awards. The oscars are for excellence in film and are considered a generally classy event. I think this was one of the best years I've seen in a while and I really enjoyed it.

So tell me, did you watch the Oscars? What did you think? Anything you wish had happened differently?

Until next time,
Heather!

BOOK HAUL

Recently I bought some new books, and I wanted to share my purchases with you all!

1. Two Truths and a Lie- Sara Shepard. This is the third book in the Lying Game series by the author of the Pretty Little Liars series. I like these books a lot better, although I don't like the show.

2. the Night Circus- Erin Morgenstern. I've heard great things about this book, so let's see how it goes!! Erin has partaken in NaNoWriMo in the past, so it's nice to see her go so far!

3. The Fault in Our Stars- John Green. I'm excited to watch this! I watch the Vlogbrothers on youtube a fair bit, because I'm a dork! Everyone praises this work, and I know it'll be great! DFTBA

So there it is! The three books I've bought recently. I'm posting this on my personal blog as well as my critic blog.

I will probably review these books on my critics blog, so follow me over there if you're interested :)

SEE YOU LATER :)
Heather :)

My favourite Ipad apps!

Hello! Heather back again with a new post! Today I want to tell you about my favourite ipod/iphone/ipad apps. I have an Ipad2, so that is what I use these apps on. Some of them were free, some of them I paid for. I will try to write down the prices if I remember them!

10. Tiny Tower. [free] It's a fun game, but it get's old pretty fast.

9. Blog Press. [paid, 4.99$ I think?] This is actually how I'm writing this post right now. I like it. I have a keyboard from my Ipad, so it's really easy to type with it. this is my second blog, so it's nice to be able to do things on this blog without having to log out of my other one!

8. Brisksaber. [free] It's like fruit ninja, but Star Wars. hence it is much better. the end.

7. Family Feud. [Paid, 5.99$] My family and I LOVE this app. in fact, we sometimes play it at restaurants. it's fun, I will admit some of the top answers are so strange. Who keeps a housefly as a pet? However, we love it and play it all the time.

6. Pages. [9.99] As a writer, I had no problem paying that much for Pages. I am a mac owner, so I like having pages on here as well, especially with iCloud. In fact, I actually wrote the last fourth of my novel on my iPad with this program. It was easy to transfer to my computer and has a great layout!

5. Game of Life. [paid, 5.99] It's like the board game, only in app version. I love it and its such a blast. My friends and I play it non-stop.

4. Instagram. [Free] Everyone knows what Instagram is. It's basically a picture sharing program for mac users. However, I want them to come out with an ipad version, because the quality isn't the best with the iphone app on here!

3. Scene it! movies 2. [paid, 5.99$] I'm a huge movie fanatic. I'm also a scene it fanatic. I love playing this game to pass the time! I also have the Harry Potter one, surprisingly I don't like it as much. it isn't set up the way this one is, plus I have the HP board game so I've seen most of the questions. THIS ONE IS AWESOME THOUGH! I just wish it wasn't so time pressured!

2. Temple Run. [free] Everyone and their dog loves this game. it's beyond addicting! PLAY IT!!!!!!!!

1. Plants vs. Zombies. [Paid, 9.99$] yes, this one was pretty pricy. However, it's number one on my list for a reason. I'm obsessed. I'm not really a video game person. I like playing Mario Party, Mario Kart and Super Smash bros on the N64, wii, and game cube. Not to mention the Sims 3 on my computer. Something about this game sucked me right in. It's so fun!! You have to use strategy, which I enjoy. Sometimes I actually found it stressful. I have beaten it already, but I'm going through adventure mode again now!! :)

HOPE YOU ENJOYED THIS POST :) UNTIL NEXT TIME,
HEATHER <3

Heather Reviews: Smash

Smash is a brand new t.v show, and I thought I would review it. Being a fan of Glee, a musical t.v show appealed to me. However, I didn't start watching this show until episode 2 was out. The show stars Debra Messing, Jack Davenport, Katherine McPhee, Christian Borle, Megan Hilty and many others. It is a Musical Dramedy (dramatic comedy) about the behind the scenes of creating a musical about Marilyn Monroe.

Debra Messing (Julia Houston) and Christian Borle (Tom Levitt) are the writers and the creators of the musical. As of episode 2, they are searching for Marilyn. Up for the part, are two very talented girls in different ways. Katherine McPhee plays Karen Cartwright, the rookie girl next door. Megan Hilty (Ivy Lynn) has the Marilyn appearance down pack.

I will say that so far, I'm enjoying the show. It is like Glee, but mature. Which is good because Glee has been irritating lately. After the second episode, I found myself wanting more. I'm not going to give much away, because I would recommend watching the show. I did find myself immediately cheering for Katherine McPhee's character. She's so relatable and down to earth. I like Debra Messing, mainly because I adore her hair. I will say that her "family" scenes are so corny and hard to watch. Those are probably the only parts of the show I'm not a fan of, the family backstories.

However, I do recommend this show! It is very well done and very interesting! I can't wait for more episodes! I am worried about whether the rest of the episodes will hold up, but only time will tell! The songs are also very well done, and not so much auto tuned like the Glee songs. So far, I'd say 4/5.

Happy Valentines day! Until next time,

Heather!

Heather Reviews: First Aid Kit.

Don't be confused, I'm talking about a band here! First Aid Kit is a sister duo from Sweden and I'm here to review their most recent album. The album is called "The Lion's Roar" and is jam packed with folk inspired songs. I think this band is very similar to Mumford and Sons, only female.

Some of the songs are very catchy and easy to listen to, but some of them hit very close to me. "New years eve" is a song that really hits my heart, and I really love it. The title song "The Lion's Roar" is a brilliant mixture of lyrics, voice and instruments. Imagine my surprise when I was listening to this cd, and all the sudden the singer from my favourite band started to flow through my speakers. Conor Oberst from Bright Eyes ( amazing band, check them out), makes an appearance in the song " King of Everything". This song is very similar to the music Bright Eyes had on their "I'm Wide awake, It's morning" album.

Overall, I really enjoy the album. The only downside to this album is probably how badly I've been over playing it. I'll probably be annoyed with it in a few months, but that's why they should put out another cd! I would give this album a 4.5 out of 5 stars. It's definitely one of my favourite albums. I'm so glad I randomly stumbled upon this band!

Songs to listen to: in the hearts of men, new years eve, the lion's roar, I found a way.

Sounds like: Mumford and Sons, Bright eyes, Tegan and Sara.

Do I recommend it? YES

Until next time,
Heather
